The findings, published in JAMA Ophthalmology, suggest a promising new tool for managing childhood myopia.
A new type of spectacle lens could be a game-changer for the growing number of children with myopia. A 24-month randomized, double-masked clinical trial published in JAMA Ophthalmology found that highly aspherical lenslet (HAL) spectacles dramatically outperformed standard single-vision lenses (SVL) in slowing myopia progression among children aged 6 to 12.
The trial enrolled 159 children across 9 U.S. sites, with about 85% completing the full two-year follow-up. The HAL lenses were well-tolerated, with no serious lens-related adverse events, and visual acuity outcomes were comparable between groups.
