Microplastics are showing up in human tumors, blood, and brain tissue — but does that mean they cause cancer? Not so fast. Despite biological plausibility and growing public concern, no human epidemiologic study has linked microplastic exposure to cancer incidence, and experts say we're far from establishing a causal link.
Microplastics have been detected virtually everywhere in the human body — blood, brain tissue, placentas, and tumors — and federal agencies have committed $144 million to study them. Public alarm is understandable, especially given the rising incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer in generations that grew up surrounded by plastic. But when it comes to cancer causation, the science simply isn't there yet.
Small studies have found higher microplastic concentrations in tumor tissue than in adjacent healthy tissue — including a pilot study showing ~2.5x more microplastics in prostate tumor tissue, and a Nature Health study detecting elevated levels in peritumoral brain tissue. However, experts caution that tumors may simply accumulate microplastics rather than being caused by them, and methodological concerns cloud many findings. The stronger carcinogenic evidence points to plastic chemicals — like vinyl chloride, PFAS, and phthalates — rather than the particles themselves.
