Your immune system may already hold clues about how well a vaccine will work for you. Researchers at Arizona State University used AI to analyze antibody patterns in over 4,000 people and identified "immune readiness" signatures that predicted strong vs. weak COVID-19 vaccine responses. Surprisingly, some healthy people responded poorly while some immunosuppressed individuals mounted strong responses.
We've long known that vaccines don't work the same for everyone — but now AI may be able to tell us why before a single dose is given. Researchers at Arizona State University analyzed blood samples from over 4,000 people, measuring antibodies against 185 antigens — including viruses, bacteria, and autoimmune targets — to see if pre-existing immune patterns could predict COVID-19 vaccine response.
Using deep learning, the team identified "sentinel" antibodies — pre-vaccination markers tied to common microbes like Staph aureus, RSV, and human respirovirus 3 — that signaled stronger vaccine responses. Crucially, health status alone wasn't a reliable predictor: some immunosuppressed individuals responded strongly, while 5–6% of healthy participants showed weak responses.
