Revenue cycle giant R1 is acquiring Humata Health, an AI-powered prior authorization startup, to push the industry closer to real-time insurance preapprovals. Humata's tool boasts a 96% first-pass approval rate and automates the full authorization workflow. The move comes as federal rules and voluntary insurer commitments are already pushing for faster, electronic prior auth decisions.
Revenue cycle management company R1 has announced plans to acquire Humata Health, a Florida-based startup founded in 2023 that uses AI to automate the prior authorization process. The deal, expected to close in Q3 2026, will fold Humata's technology into R1's existing billing platform — which already processes over 600 million transactions annually across 1,000 providers.
Prior authorization has long been a pain point for patients, providers, and the broader healthcare system. Providers say it bogs them down in paperwork and delays care, while patients rank it as their biggest burden in navigating the health system. Humata's AI tool tackles the problem end-to-end — identifying insurer policies, drafting authorization requests, and tracking them through to approval.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: With federal rules mandating faster prior auth decisions and EHR giant Epic also launching real-time auth tools, the industry is at an inflection point. R1's acquisition signals that AI-driven automation could meaningfully reduce the administrative burden of the preapproval process for both providers and patients.
