Novo Nordisk and Novonesis are teaming up to find out if synbiotics, probiotics, and prebiotics can boost the benefits of GLP-1 obesity drugs like Wegovy. The collaboration will track markers like blood glucose, cholesterol, and gut microbiome changes. Results are expected in the second half of 2027.
Novo Nordisk and Danish biosolutions company Novonesis are investigating whether synbiotics, probiotics, and prebiotics can deliver added benefits for patients already taking GLP-1 medications like Wegovy. The partnership, originally announced to explore the gut microbiome's role in metabolic health, has since narrowed its focus to whether microbiome-targeting supplements can serve as a meaningful adjunct to GLP-1 therapy.
Results from the study are expected in the second half of 2027, according to Novonesis CEO Ester Baiget. The research will measure effects on blood glucose, cholesterol, gut microbiome composition, and related biomarkers — key indicators of metabolic health in obesity patients.
Key Takeaways:
Why it matters: As GLP-1 drugs reshape obesity treatment, clinicians and patients are increasingly asking what lifestyle and nutritional strategies can maximize outcomes. This study could provide evidence-based guidance on whether microbiome supplements are a worthwhile addition to GLP-1 regimens.
