Young stroke patients with a migraine history tend to have strokes earlier in life, but they also bounce back better. A new study found that migraine with aura was tied to younger stroke age and a higher rate of patent foramen ovale (PFO), while migraine without aura independently predicted better functional recovery at discharge.
A new study published in the European Journal of Neurology sheds light on how migraine history shapes stroke outcomes in young adults. Researchers analyzed data from 289 patients (median age 48) with acute ischaemic stroke or TIA, finding that those with a migraine history — especially migraine with aura — experienced strokes at a notably younger age than those without migraine.
The connection doesn't stop there. Migraine with aura was also strongly linked to patent foramen ovale (PFO), a structural heart defect that can allow blood clots to bypass the lungs and travel to the brain. On the flip side, migraine without aura emerged as an independent predictor of good functional recovery at discharge — a surprisingly positive finding amid the otherwise concerning associations.
