Tarsus Pharmaceuticals is expanding into the retina space by acquiring Alkeus Pharmaceuticals and iRenix Medical. The deals bring two investigational therapies into its pipeline: gildeuretinol for Stargardt disease and IRX-101 to improve patient comfort after intravitreal injections. Together, the acquisitions could cost Tarsus over $1.3 billion depending on regulatory and commercial milestones.
Tarsus Pharmaceuticals is making a major strategic pivot into retinal disease, announcing plans to acquire both Alkeus Pharmaceuticals and iRenix Medical. The move signals the company's ambition to grow beyond its current flagship product, Xdemvy (lotilaner), and become a broader leader in eye care — particularly in areas where patients have historically had few treatment options.
The two acquisitions bring distinct pipeline assets. Gildeuretinol (ALK-001), from Alkeus, is an investigational once-daily oral therapy for Stargardt disease — a rare inherited retinal disorder — designed to slow retinal damage caused by toxic dimer buildup. IRX-101, from iRenix, is an ocular antiseptic aimed at reducing pain and corneal toxicity following intravitreal injections, a common procedure in retinal care.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: These acquisitions could meaningfully expand treatment options for patients with Stargardt disease — a condition with no currently approved therapies — and improve the experience of the millions receiving intravitreal injections annually.
