Overall prenatal air pollution is down, but wildfire smoke is surging. A new study found that while total fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure during pregnancy dropped significantly from 2003 to 2019, wildfire smoke's share more than doubled — hitting low-income and American Indian/Alaska Native communities hardest. The hard-won progress on clean air is increasingly being offset by wildfires.
Good news, bad news. A study published in Frontiers in Environmental Health found that overall prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) dropped by 34% between 2003 and 2019 — a meaningful public health win. But wildfire smoke is increasingly chipping away at those gains, with its share of total prenatal PM2.5 exposure more than doubling over the same period.
Researchers linked county-level air quality data from 2,842 counties to 64.5 million birth records to track trends nationally. While non-wildfire PM2.5 plummeted by 37%, wildfire-related PM2.5 surged — and by 2017–2019, its contribution in counties with maternity hospital shortages was nearly double that of well-served areas.
