Kids diagnosed with ADHD face a significantly higher risk of psychiatric and neurologic conditions as adults, a new study finds. Using data from the 1987 Finnish Birth Cohort, researchers found that childhood ADHD was strongly linked to adult hospitalizations for epilepsy, mood disorders, substance use, and more — but showed little connection to physical (somatic) conditions.
A new study published in Molecular Psychiatry adds to the growing evidence that childhood ADHD doesn't just affect kids — it reshapes adult health trajectories. Researchers from University College London and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare analyzed data from over 52,000 participants in the 1987 Finnish Birth Cohort, tracking hospitalizations up to age 33.
The findings were striking: adults who had been diagnosed with ADHD before age 18 were nearly 3.5 times more likely to be hospitalized for mental and behavioral disorders, and significantly more likely to face epilepsy, mood disorders, substance use disorders, and neurotic disorders. Notably, the elevated risk was largely confined to psychiatric and neurologic conditions — somatic (physical) conditions showed little to no association.
