Low sodium levels in the first days of life spell trouble for newborns. A Finnish study found that infants with perinatal asphyxia who developed low sodium (hyponatraemia) in their first 72 hours faced significantly higher odds of dying or developing neurodevelopmental disorders like cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and hearing loss — with severe cases carrying nearly four times the risk.
Low sodium levels in newborns could be a serious red flag. A Finnish retrospective study of 269 NICU infants with perinatal asphyxia or hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) found that hyponatraemia — low blood sodium — in the first 72 hours of life was strongly linked to death or neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) like cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and hearing loss.
The findings are striking: over 70% of infants developed some degree of low sodium in the first three days, and severe cases carried nearly four times the risk of death or NDDs. Notably, only moderate-to-severe hyponatraemia drove the risk — mild low sodium wasn't significantly associated with poor outcomes.
